3rd International Ukulele Ceilidh dates set

Liverpool, Nova Scotia's 3rd International Ukulele Ceilidh has released its dates for this year's fest as October 22 through 25. Patrons will attend shows at Liverpool's 385-seat Astor Theatre and early evening performances at local pubs and restaurants to take in the Maritime dining experience.

"We welcome beginners and experienced players from across the globe to join us for a weekend of celebration of the history and the future of the ukulele. Throughout the Ceilidh you will be joining like-minded uke lovers, participating in workshops and jam sessions and enjoying the well-known hospitality and beautiful scenery of Nova Scotia’s South Shore."

Paxton to headline Mission

Good Medicine

It's been announced by Canadian Heritage that the Tongue on the Post folk music festival in Medicine Hat, Alberta, will receive Federal funding for the third, annual event. Local MP LaVar Payne made the announcement to the Medicine Hat Folk Music Club, on behalf of Heritage Minister James Moore, saying, "Local festivals like this one bring people of all ages and backgrounds together and contribute to a community's quality of life."

The festival takes place at the end of this month, on the 30th and 31st.

NFB Goes Live

Multimedia fans can note that the National Film Board has set up their new website to feature a screening room of some of their classics, with new films being added as time goes on. For folk fans, be sure to revisit some memorable classics, such as "The Log Driver's Waltz", or my favourite, "Blackfly", both based off songs by Wade Hemsworth.

It's all in celebration of the NFB's 70th anniversary, so congratulations to them - and a thank you from us.

Acts Booked for Salmon Arm

Some of the lineup for the 17th Annual Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival have been announced. Festival goers to the event, which happens August 14th to 16th in Salmon Arm, BC, on the shores of lovely Shuswap Lake, can expect to be entertained by blues and folk performers including Ontario-born songstress Serena Ryder, Samantha Shultz of Edmonton (nominated for Performer of the Year at the 2006 Canadian Folk Music Awards), international acts like the U.K.'s Oysterband and more.

Welcome to Folksongs.ca. It's my hope that this portal might provide aficionados of the genre with some interesting links, news and comments from the Canadian folks music scene.
